My Dad enlisted (because he said it was the right thing to do) and was sent to Vietnam. He never spoke of it when my sisters and I were young. Mental awareness back then wasn't what it is now. He says most of those that came back were treated horribly so he never wanted to even admit he went over. After 20 years of therapy for PTSD he can finally talk about it. He said when they awoke in the morning everything, including the water they had to drink, had an orange film over it. And they hadn't sprayed his area in months. They were told the water was safe. Then, about 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer. The doctor at the VA slipped and told him it was a direct result of agent orange. It most commonly causes cancer in soft tissue which is what tonsils are. He made it through chemo and radiation, but can no longer grow facial hair on the right side and has a square along the bottom right side of his head that no hair grows. Also, his sense of taste was destroyed and sense of smell decreased. Until I watched this I had no idea how lucky my sisters and I were, in that his exposure could have caused us to have birth defects. Oh, and the doc that told him that his cancer was from agent orange was fired shortly after it came out she had said that. I can't say positively that she was fired for her saying that but it is a coincidence. The doc that replaced her for my Dad's care told him the previous doctor misspoke and he would be placing his own note in my Dad's file that agent orange wasn't a factor in my Dad's cancer. So my Dad couldn't seek compensation from the government for his cancer.
